Founding Scientist

Dr. John Rowlands is Senior Scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute; Founding Scientific Director at Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute; Adjunct Professor, Department of Physics, Lakehead University; Adjunct Professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Waterloo; and Professor in the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Medical Biophysics and Medical Imaging at University of Toronto.  Dr. Rowlands completed his BSc in Physics and his PhD in Experimental Solid State Physics at Leeds University, UK before moving to Canada.

Dr. Rowlands runs a strong independent research program in digital large area detector science and technology and pioneered the use of amorphous selenium in flat-panel X-ray imagers.  He has peer-reviewed funding from the National Institutes of Health (US), US Army, the Medical Research Council of Canada, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the National Cancer Institute of Canada, and is the author of 35 peer reviewed papers, 17 book chapters and conference proceedings papers, and 26 abstracts published over the last five years resulting in four patents.
