|Michael Julius, Chairman of the Board
Michael Julius is the Vice President of Research at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) where he is responsible for an annual research budget of $120 million. SRI is dedicated to discovery research and, through private sector partnerships and commercialization, its translation into new medical devices, drug targets and therapeutics. Julius holds a Ph.D. in genetics and immunology from Stanford University, USA and was previously the Chairman of the University of Toronto’s Department of Immunology.
Steven Chackowicz is the Executive Vice President of Aspect Imaging, the world’s leader in high-performance compact MRI imaging systems. Previously, Chackowicz was the founder and vice-president of Visible Genetics (acquired by Bayer) and the North American Sales manager for Pharmacia Biotech (acquired by GE Healthcare). Steve is a biotechnology executive and serial entrepreneur experienced in early-stage biotechnology companies. He has extensive experience of markets outside North America and managed distribution channels in Asia, Europe and South America. Chackowicz holds a B.Sc. in biochemistry from the University of Toronto.
Jeff T. Courtney is interim Vice-President, Commercialization and Chief Commercial Officer of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) and has extensive experience in venture capital, business development and strategic planning. He is a director of the Ontario Preclinical Imaging Consortium and Tornado Spectral Systems, as well as a member of the Investment Committee for MaRS Discovery District’s Investment Accelerator Fund. Previously, Courtney was Managing Director for Verde Ventures, a management consulting firm specialized in providing financial and strategic advice to bio-medical companies. He was co-founder/ CEO of Sempra Therapeutics, partner at CDP Sofinov, President of Faulting Canada Inc., Executive Vice-President of Pharmascience Inc. and held senior position with Johnson & Johnson. Courtney holds a B.Sc. in microbiology from the University of Guelph.
Joel Liederman, B.Eng. MBA, is Vice President Physical Sciences at MaRS Innovation (MI) where he is responsible for the organization’s investments in medical device, information technology, communications and healthcare IT. With over 40 years of investment management, engineering, project management and business development experience, which includes helping to launch over 25 start-up companies, Joel provides operational, strategic, business development and product development guidance to the entrepreneurs who lead MI’s portfolio companies. Consistent with MI’s ‘high touch’ investment approach, Joel has assumed hands-on management and leadership roles in several of MI’s portfolio companies until the start-ups were sufficiently well funded to engage full-time business management.
|Alex A. Van Adzin
Mr. Van Adzin has broad experience as the Chief Legal Officer, Senior Vice President/Vice President, and Corporation Secretary for public and private companies, including Photo Diagnostic Systems, Inc., Analogic Corporation, Mercury Systems, and ManagedComp, Inc. He has also served as the Chief Representative of a U.S. corporation’s China Representative Office and as a member of the Boards of Directors of a Chinese medical imaging company, a Canadian automotive company, a European medical device manufacturer, an Indian automotive joint venture, and a European holding company. His work encompasses corporate governance of public and private companies, extensive international experience, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, contracts, securities, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, employment law, litigation, and real estate development. Van Adzin’s international experience involves acquisitions, joint ventures, and other projects in Canada, Brazil, Colombia, the U.K., France, Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Italy, India, Australia, China, Korea, and Japan. Van Adzin holds an A.B. from Columbia University, an M.C.P. from Harvard University, and a Juris Doctorate from Boston University Law School.
